Your Inner Mentor Knows the Purpose of Your Art
I’ve spent a lot of time talking about the inner voices that keep us from creating (meet the Jellyfish, the Judge and the Jailer, who comprise the Safety Squad that would rather we didn’t start, finish or show our work to anyone to keep us safe).
We also have inner voices that are helpful, inspirational and supportive.
Over the last two weeks, I’ve introduced you to your Muse, the inner voice of inspiration for your next work, and your inner craftsperson, the Maker.
Now let's meet the Big Kahuna
The Big Kahuna is your inner Mentor.
This part of you knows what you’re up to. The big picture--the purpose of your art/work, who you want to impact, how you want to show up.
I talk to this part when I want to get in touch with, or re-acquaint myself with my Big Ideas--why I do what I do, and what change I want my work to make in the world.
It’s worth strengthening the relationship with this part of yourself, especially when you get stuck, stymied or afraid. Try some of these questions to start out:
- What is the purpose of my work? (I know--this is a bit like the joke essay question from a mythical SAT test: Define the Universe. Give three examples. But try it anyway and see what answers come.)
- How can I best express this purpose?
- Who do you want me to impact?
- Anything else you want me to know?
If you do this, I guarantee you’ll learn something you didn’t know. Try it and tell me how you do.
I’ll support you in getting to know your inner Mentor
I support creatives from all disciplines who see a chaotic mess of possibilities and help them turn those into a profitable, sustainable business. If you'd like support talking to and getting to know your inner Mentor, I can help. Book a 15 minute call with me to discuss how I can support you.
