Why Talk to Your Mentor About Your Creative Purpose?
Your inner Mentor is a key figure in helping you explain what you make to the people who want to buy it. For some reason though, maybe because we seek to avoid pain more than we seek to experience pleasure and flow, there’s a tendency to focus on the critical voices in our heads, our internal Safety Squad (meet the Jellyfish, the Judge, and the Jailer).
We Also Have Inner Voices that are Helpful, Inspirational and Supportive. That includes the Mentor.
Over the last three weeks, I’ve introduced you to your Muse--the inner voice of inspiration for your next work; your inner craftsperson--your Maker; and your Mentor--the part of you knows what you’re up to and knows the big picture--the purpose of your art/work, who you want to impact, how you want to show up.
Last week I suggested some questions you could ask your inner Mentor
Here they are:
- What is the purpose of my art/work? (I know--this is a bit like the joke essay question from a mythical SAT test: Define the Universe. Give three examples. But try it anyway and see what answers come.)
- How can I best express this purpose?
- Who do you want me to impact?
- Anything else you want me to know?
Why bother asking the Mentor questions?
Because this is what your people need to know about you so they know your art is what they need.
Yes. Weirdly, This is the First Step in Building Relationships with the People Who Need Your Art.
It’s where you start, before you start marketing.
If you do this, I guarantee you’ll learn something you didn’t know. Try it and tell me how you do.
