Meet Your Inner Maker, A Part Inside You That Knows How to Do Your Art

Although I’ve spent a lot of time talking about the inner voices that keep us from creating, we also have inner voices that are helpful, inspirational, and supportive. Today, I'm introducing you to your inner craftsperson, the Maker.

Before we talk about your Maker, you can meet the Jellyfish, the Judge, and the Jailer in the blogs I've linked here. They comprise the Safety Squad, and they would rather we didn’t start, finish or show our work to anyone in order to keep us safe.

More about the helpful, inspirational voices

Last week I introduced you to your Muse. This is the inner voice of inspiration for your next work. Go here for some suggestions about how to start the conversation with this part of yourself.

Now let's meet your Maker, no...not God

Your Maker is your inner craftsperson. It’s the part of you that has the skills to make what you do. It’s your Inner Writer, Painter, Therapist, Designer, Coach, Acupuncturist. It may even know what else you need to learn if you’re starting a new project that calls for new expertise.

Channel your inner craftsperson, ie, your Maker, by having a conversation with it. And to strengthen the relationship with this part of yourself, you can ask your Maker questions--maybe starting with these:

  1. In what areas are we most skillful?
  2. What ideas do you have about how I could get even better with my art/work?
  3. Do you have ideas or input about my current projects?
  4. Anything else you want me to know?

If you do this, I guarantee you’ll learn something you didn’t know. Try it and tell me how you do.
