Introducing Your Inner Creative Council

For the last few weeks, I’ve been suggesting you have a conversation with your creativity, whether you believe yourself to be creative, and especially if you think you aren’t. (If you haven’t done it yet, try this freebie to guide you.)

It’s one thing to talk to your creativity once (did you try it? I hope so). It’s another thing altogether to make a habit of talking to it. I’d like you to meet some new characters that you might start talking to regularly about your creativity.

Just like you might realize you have inner voices that appear, or worse, block you from creating (meet the Jellyfish, the Judge and the Jailer, who comprise the Safety Squad that would rather we didn’t start, finish or show our work to anyone to keep us safe); you also have inner voices that are helpful, inspirational and supportive.

It’s only fair.

Introducing the Creative Council

You also have an inner Muse, Maker and Mentor. They are your inner Creative Council.

Your Muse is full of ideas for new projects.

Your Maker knows how to execute them, and where to go if you need to learn new skills.

Your Mentor knows your worth as a creative, knows what your and your work are up to in the world, and why it matters.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be introducing you to your inner Creative Council and giving you ideas for questions you can ask them and conversations you can have.

But you can start making relationships with them now...

Even before you read my next blog post, you can begin getting to know your inner Creative Council. If you’re stuck for new ideas, spend five minutes with paper and pencil or laptop and ask your Muse for 10 suggestions of new projects.

If you’re struggling with finding the right technique or skill to finish something, ask your Maker for help.

And if you’ve lost sight of the purpose of your art, ask your Mentor to tell you.

I guarantee you’ll learn something you didn’t know. If you try this, tell me how you do.
