December's for Doing All the Things You Promised to Do, But Didn’t.
For the last couple months I’ve been choosing a theme and writing all my blogs around it. January is racing toward us. Every New Year we all think about our goals for the year. So, I decided the theme for December needed to be me doing things I promised to do in 2019, but didn’t, and writing about it.
The first thing on the list
I’ve begun the first task already; writing and uploading all the newsletters the month before, so my colleague, Willow, doesn’t have to keep reminding me and I don’t have to keep feeling guilty.
This turned out to be a good idea.
The writing came easier. A theme emerged from the ether at the beginning of the month which also made writing easier and faster. Plus, I don’t feel guilty that I’m making Willow sit around waiting for my writing.
The next things I haven’t done in 2019 yet are:
- Looking at who actually opens and reads my newsletters and correspond with them more personally.
- Shooting a bunch of videos at the same time. I’ve suggested to two nonprofit boards that they gather all the board members together along with a couple of decent tripods and phones and record a bunch of videos all at once. Later.com can post them over a longer period of time instead of all at once. I love-hate recording videos myself and procrastinate wildly especially if it’s been a while since I’ve made one.
- Do a bunch of Instagram stories all at once and post them over time as well. See procrastination problem above.
- Look at which Facebook and Instagram posts draw the most traffic and either boost them or do more, similar ones.
Each Monday I’ll tell you how this all goes.
You probably noticed everything I procrastinated fits together under one theme: fear of being seen. I’ve written about this before. I’m becoming an expert on why we don’t want to be visible. Knowing WHY is the booby prize, though. I need to talk to the parts of myself that are afraid, then go ahead and be visible anyway.
What did you promise yourself you’d do, but didn’t? What advice did you give others that you didn’t follow? There’s time left in the year to experiment with your promises and see If they’ll work for you.
I’m one for one with writing the newsletters in advance. That worked. I’m betting that I’ll learn something by taking all of the rest of my own advice throughout December.
Do you struggle with procrastination? I recommend making a Things I Promised to Do in 2019 But Didn’t list like I did and start there. And if you need help, book a 15-minute chat.
