Hey Creative, What Are You ACTUALLY Selling?
I've designated February Take Yourself Seriously Month
Today, I'm talking about the tangible and intangible benefits that your clients reap when they buy your creative work. But first, did you catch my post last week? I talked about how to take yourself seriously by having real conversations with people on social media. Not always the easiest.
Hi! I love your IG/Facebook/Pinterest post, and I think you’re a great candidate for my 35-week program on _________. Can we talk?
Ick. You can see how not to do it, everywhere. So what’s a better way?
Getting clear about what you actually sell.
I learned a way to look at what I actually sell from a coach I worked with; Jeffrey Van Dyk.
He taught how to look at what you sell two different ways.
What are the tangible things people walk away with when they work with you (the Transactional Benefits)?
Then, how are they changed when they work with you (the Transformational Benefits)? So, we have to think about both the tangible and intangible benefits of what we offer.
Here’s how this works.
What I sell
What do people walk away with?
How are they changed?
Original painting
Something beautiful to hang on the wall
The painting evokes emotion (joy, thoughtfulness, gratitude, awe, satisfaction, other emotions)
Business Coaching Program
Clear way forward: products, prices, understanding who your people are and how to make relationships with them, marketing plan.
Peace with money, with marketing and with selling. Money blocks cleared.
Bathroom remodel
Updated fixtures, better layout, new colors, more reliable plumbing
The update brings security (no leaks), peace that comes from using the space more effectively, an intangible feeling of well-being that results from good design and building.
Dance concert
Entertainment. An evening out.
Seeing the beauty in what the human body is capable of, experiencing emotion evoked by movement, that bypasses the brain.
What do you sell?
Think critically about the tangible and intangible benefits of what it is you offer. And, if you want help answering that question, book a 15 minute chat with me and we’ll brainstorm it. When you get clear about it you can talk about it; then your people can see you make what they need.
Your work matters.
Have you ever thought about the intangible benefits of your creative work to the people who buy it? Let me know in the comments below.
