Creatives: What’s Your Definition of Success?
I have been writing about how to define success. And how, unless I get conscious about it, all my definitions revolve around money. Although money is important, I think it's also important to track creative success. So I made the Alternative Success List, with a good mix of money successes and creative successes.
Or at least I started on the list for the business side of my life. Here it is so far.
Alternative Success List
- Paying my bills. On time. This might seem like a low bar, but for a portion of my business life, I couldn’t do this. I can now, and weirdly, I enjoy it.
- Walking my talk, mostly. If I'm advising you to do something, I’ve tried it myself. I also didn’t used to be able to say this. I ‘did research’ instead of trying things out myself. Two of the books I’ve written are based on personal experience and two aren’t. The sales figures speak for themselves.
- Finishing books. If the idea for a book idea chooses me and I accept being chosen, then I’m bound to finish. I’m so close to finishing the book: Artists: Prosper! But I’m up against what happens each time I get close to the finish line with a book; the first 80% of the book takes 80% of the effort and the remaining 20% takes the other 80%. (Joking. That’s just how it feels.) But I’m committed to finishing and I will.
- Marketing that does more than just market. I want to highlight other creatives while I talk about my own books and coaching.
- And the big megillah-- am I being of real help to people?
