Why Does the World Need Another Book?
My new book, Artists: Prosper! Make Peace With Your Brain, and Money + Joy With Your Art is out this month (although it might not be ready to order until October 30th. Fingers crossed). There is a bit of mystery about how artists make money, and this book can help. I'll be talking more about that below. But first...
Why does the world need another book?
I’ve been a business coach for almost 20 years. In that time, almost every client I’ve worked with has struggled with money. I don’t have a representative sample--people come to me with money issues because I know what to do about them. But that doesn’t make them less painful or challenging.
I was often helpful, but...
There was always some lingering fear that the solutions my clients and I came up with for their money troubles weren’t permanent. There seemed to be underlying issues I couldn’t find or touch.
Enter parts work
I stumbled across the idea proposed by the Swiss Psychologist Carl Jung, that we had lots of parts inside us. We had the part that wanted to eat her veggies, and the part that wanted the ice cream. The part that liked the gym and the part that liked the couch. Even more interesting, we had parts inside us that ran parts of our lives, including our financial and creative lives.
That’s the premise of the book
We have parts running our financial and creative lives, often using strategies we crafted when we were children. Discovering these parts, talking to them, understanding what they’re protecting us from, and making friends, loosens their grip and gives us much broader and more functional choices in our lives. I think how artists make money is directly linked to their relationships with these parts of themselves.
If you’ve had trouble getting started making your art, suffered from a loud inner critic, or been afraid of being visible, this book will help. And if you’ve wondered about the mechanics of getting started selling your work, this book will show you how.
If you’d like to be notified about when it’s out, enter your name and email address here. You’ll be among the first to know.
THANKS for your support--for reading my blog, for helping me work out the ideas for the book in this writing, and for continuing to do your art, whatever form it takes.
Our work matters.
