How to Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is
What went right for you in 2019?
For me (in addition to the epiphanies about marketing, I got more clarity about money, and how to put my money where my heart is.
Why does it matter if you put your money where your heart is?
Two reasons. First, when I am buying stuff that doesn’t nurture me, I can never buy enough of it.
There aren’t enough dresses in the world (my particular go-to) to buy the feeling of being lovable.
I recommend talking with the part of yourself that knows how to put your money where your heart is. After I had a talk with mine, I was able to understand that buying 'enough' things doesn't make me loveable.
Second, doing this practice helps me create a functional relationship with money as a neutral tool, instead of a measure of my worth or a way to buy something it can’t buy (safety, approval, love, forgiveness, etc.). Viewing money this way takes the power out of pricing and selling my work. Pricing and marketing and selling go from feeling like I’m juggling dynamite, to simple, easy (okay maybe not totally easy but simple for sure) experimentation.
I talk to parts of myself to get information that hasn’t yet made it to my conscious brain. You can read about how to do this practice yourself here. It doesn’t take any special training or psychic abilities. Just an open mind. I had some enlightening conversations with the part of me that knows how to put my money where my heart is. Below is an excerpt.
C: May I speak to the part of me that knows how to put my money where my heart is?
P: Yes.
C: What would you like me to know?
P: That you’re doing better at this, but you could do more.
C: What should I do more of?
P: If you’re seriously asking--look at your monthly spending at the end of every month and ask yourself if your heart was in each expenditure. If so, great. If not, ask what you need to do differently next month.
C: Okay. Thank you. Anything else?
P: Try it for December’s spending now and see what you learn.
C: Okay. Thank you.
What did I learn from following this part's advice?
I did what the part suggested and saw I spent money carelessly in a couple places where I should have done more research first. Not the end of the world, but now I know what I need to do better this month.
How can you get clear on what it means to YOU to put your money where your heart is?
You can try what I did yourself. After asking permission to talk to the part like I did above, try these three questions:
- What do you want me to know about putting my money where my heart is?
- Where should I start?
- Anything else you want me to know?
If you try this, tell me what you discover. If you get stuck and want help, book a 15 minute chat.
Isn’t it cool that there is always more to learn?
